70% → 82% passing on Indiana's 7th grade Checkpoint 1

After two weeks with the reteach pages, between Opportunity 1 and Opportunity 2.

“Amazing and Worth every Cent!”

This resource is spot on! We just took Opportunity 1 and i had 70 percent of my kids pass the 7th Grade Math Checkpoint 1. I then used the reteaching pages and focused on targeting instruction to those questions that were most missed on the first opportunity for 2 weeks. We then took Opportunity 2 and I had 82 percent total passing! That is the most I have had passing since the Checkpoints were created! If you teach 7th grade Math in Indiana, it is definitely worth the money!

Start with a readiness check

Before the first testing window, a beginning-of-year diagnostic shows which skills from last year students still need. The Readiness Checks are on the Math Class 678 classroom site.

What grade 8 covers

Short names in our own words. See IDOE’s ILEARN page for the official standard text.

Checkpoint 1

  • 8.NS.2Comparing, plotting, and estimating with irrational numbers
  • 8.NS.3Properties of integer exponents with common rational bases
  • 8.NS.4Multi-step real-world problems with rational numbers
  • 8.AF.1Solving linear equations and inequalities with rational coefficients
  • 8.AF.2Classifying one/infinite/no-solution linear equations

Checkpoint 2

  • 8.AF.3The definition of a function; ordered pairs, tables, graphs
  • 8.AF.4Qualitative graphs: increasing/decreasing, linear/nonlinear, max/min
  • 8.AF.5y = mx + b defines a linear function; linear vs. nonlinear
  • 8.AF.6Construct a linear function; interpret rate of change and y-intercept
  • 8.AF.7Compare two linear functions in different representations
  • 8.AF.8Approximating a system's solution by graphing

Checkpoint 3

  • 8.DSP.1Scatter plots: clustering, outliers, and association
  • 8.DSP.2Line of best fit: interpret slope and y-intercept in context
  • 8.GM.1Dilations, translations, rotations, reflections in the coordinate plane
  • 8.GM.2Volume of cones, spheres, pyramids; surface area of spheres
  • 8.GM.3The Pythagorean Theorem, including the 3-D box diagonal

Summative only

  • 8.NS.1Rational vs. irrational; decimal equivalents; repeating decimal to fraction
  • 8.DSP.3Compound-event probability: independent and dependent
  • 8.DSP.4Independent, dependent, complementary, mutually exclusive events
  • 8.DSP.5The multiplication counting principle

Try three items

One from each checkpoint. Pick an answer to see the worked solution.

8.NS.4Approaching

A square tile has a side length of 3.5 inches. What is the total area of 12 such tiles?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

8.AF.8Approaching

A system of equations is given.

y = 2x + 3
2y = 4x + 6

What is the solution to this system?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

8.GM.2At Proficiency

An ice cream shop sells waffle cones shaped like a cone, with a radius of 6 cm and a height of 14 cm.

What is the volume of one cone? Use 3.14 for π. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

Teacher questions

How is the mock form different from the practice set?

The practice set groups items by standard and labels each one Approaching, At or Above Proficiency, so you can see where a student stands. The mock form mixes the same standards without labels, the way a test does.

What if students still miss a standard after the checkpoint?

That's what the intervention is for: a teacher page, a student reteach page, targeted practice, error analysis and an exit ticket for each standard. IDOE's optional second opportunity stays open through April 9.

Are these actual state test questions?

No. Every item is original and aligned to the published standards. Nothing is copied from a state test, a released item or a reference sheet.
