5.CA.1
Divide.
1,462 ÷ 23
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionTwenty-three does not go into 14, and it goes into 146 six times, because 23 × 6 = 138 while 23 × 7 = 161 is too large. Subtracting 138 from 146 leaves 8, and bringing down the 2 makes 82. Twenty-three goes into 82 three times, because 23 × 3 = 69, and 82 − 69 = 13, which is smaller than 23 and so is the remainder. The quotient is 63 with a remainder of 13. Checking: 23 × 63 = 1,449 and 1,449 + 13 = 1,462.
5.CA.4
A roll of wire is 516 meters long. Elena uses 234 meters of it to repair a fence.
How many meters of wire are left on the roll?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionSix and 4 are not multiples of each other, and 12 is a denominator both divide into. Renaming gives 516 = 5212 and 234 = 2912. Two twelfths is not enough to take 9 twelfths from, so regroup one whole meter from the 5 into twelfths: 5 wholes and 2 twelfths becomes 4 wholes and 14 twelfths. Now subtract each part: 4 − 2 = 2 wholes, and 14 twelfths − 9 twelfths = 5 twelfths. There are 2512 meters left. Estimating checks it: about 516 take away nearly 3 leaves a bit more than 2.
5.CA.10
Amara jogged 3.4 kilometers in the morning and 2.5 kilometers in the evening.
How many kilometers did Amara jog in all?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionFinding a total means adding: 3.4 + 2.5. Adding the tenths gives 4 tenths + 5 tenths = 9 tenths, which is still less than one whole, so no regrouping is needed. Adding the whole kilometers gives 3 + 2 = 5. The total is 5.9 kilometers, which is reasonable because each run was between 2 and 4 kilometers.
