5.M.4

Counting only the cubes you can see

What it looks like
On a 3 × 2 × 2 prism the student answers 8 or 10 — the faces they can count — instead of 12. The answer is always short, and always short by exactly the hidden interior.
What to do
Have them build one layer with blocks and say how many, then ask how many layers before touching the drawing again.
5.M.5

Treating B as a length

What it looks like
Given B = 12 square units and h = 3, the student multiplies 12 by 3 correctly but cannot say what B was; asked for B on a later item they give one edge instead of the base area.
What to do
Write B = l × w beside the formula every time until they stop asking.
5.CA.1

Dropping the zero in the quotient

What it looks like
816 ÷ 4 comes back as 24 instead of 204. The digits are right and one place value is missing, so the answer is off by a factor of ten.
What to do
Estimate first. 816 ÷ 4 is about 800 ÷ 4 = 200, so a two-digit answer is wrong before any long division happens.
5.CA.2

Reporting the remainder when the question needs the next whole number

What it looks like
“53 students, 8 per van, how many vans?” gets the answer “6 remainder 5” or “6”. The division is correct and the interpretation is not.
What to do
Ask what happens to the leftover 5 students. Naming them out loud generally settles it faster than any rule about rounding.
