5.CA.3Approaching

Which equation shows 23 + 14 rewritten with a common denominator?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

5.CA.10At Proficiency

A bag of rice has a mass of 1.25 kilograms.

What is the mass of 4 bags?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

5.CA.4Above Proficiency

A shipping box holds two packages weighing 378 pounds and 2112 pounds.

Without finding the exact total, which is the best estimate of the combined weight?

Where students go wrong

5.CA.3

Adding straight across

What it looks like
23 + 34 comes back as 57 — numerators added, denominators added. The single most common fraction error in grade 5, and it produces an answer smaller than one of the addends, which is the quickest way to catch it.
What to do
Ask whether the answer can be smaller than 34 when you started with 34 and added something. The size check lands faster than the procedure.
5.CA.4

Choosing the operation from a keyword

What it looks like
"How much farther" or "how much is left" gets addition because the problem also contains the words "in all" earlier in the sentence. The arithmetic is usually correct; the operation is not.
What to do
Have them say the situation aloud without numbers — "she has some, she used some, what is left" — before choosing anything.
5.CA.9

Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger, column by column

What it looks like
6.35 − 2.78 comes back as 4.43: in each column the student takes whichever digit is smaller from whichever is larger, so no regrouping ever happens. Every digit looks plausible on its own.
What to do
Estimate first — 6 minus 3 is about 3, so a 4 is wrong before any column is worked — then regroup one column at a time.
5.CA.10

Stopping after the first step

What it looks like
A two-step money problem answered with the subtotal. The multiplication is right, the change is never computed, and the answer is a number that genuinely appears in the problem — so it does not look wrong at a glance.
What to do
Have them underline the question sentence before computing anything, then check the final answer against that sentence rather than against their own work.
5.NS.1

Comparing decimals by how many digits they have

What it looks like
0.48 judged smaller than 0.084 because it is shorter, or larger than 0.408 because "more digits means more". Either direction appears; what they have in common is that the digits are never lined up by place.
What to do
Give every number the same number of places with trailing zeros — 0.480, 0.408, 0.084 — and the comparison becomes a whole-number one.
5.NS.4

Reading the number of shaded parts as the percent

What it looks like
A bar cut into 20 parts with 15 shaded, reported as 15%. The count is right and the whole has been ignored — and the error disappears entirely on models cut into 100, which is why it survives so long.
What to do
Ask what the model would look like with 100 parts. A percent is always out of 100, whatever the model is cut into.
