4.CA.2
A school packed 375 apples equally into 5 crates.
How many apples went into each crate?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionAsk how many groups of 5 fit in 375. There are 70 fives in 350, leaving 25, and there are 5 more fives in 25. That makes 70 + 5, or 75, apples in each crate. Checking, 75 times 5 is 375.
4.CA.3
Which expression has the same value as 9 × 54?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionThe distributive property lets 54 be broken into 50 + 4, so 9 groups of 54 is the same as 9 groups of 50 plus 9 groups of 4. That gives 450 + 36, or 486, which is 9 × 54. Multiplying the two partial products instead of adding them makes the value far too large, and breaking 54 into 5 + 4 loses the place value of the 5.
4.CA.9
A number pattern starts at 75 and follows the rule “divide by 5.”
75, 15,
What number belongs in the box?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionThe rule splits each term into 5 equal groups to get the next one. Checking it against the two terms given, 75 ÷ 5 is 15, so the rule holds. Applying it once more gives 15 ÷ 5, or 3, and that is the number that belongs in the box. Subtracting 5 instead of dividing by 5 gives 10. Multiplying by 5 rather than dividing gives 75, which runs the pattern backward to where it started. The value 5 is the rule's own number rather than a term of the pattern.
