4.CA.3Approaching

What number belongs in the box to make the equation true?

6 × 34 = (6 × 30) + (6 × )

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

4.CA.4At Proficiency

Where students go wrong

The most common mistake on each standard, and what to do about it, from the teacher pages in the Checkpoint 1 intervention.

4.NS.1

Writing what you hear, chunk by chunk

What it looks like
“Six hundred twenty thousand, forty-five” written as 620,00045 or 62,045. The student writes each spoken group as its own number and joins them, so the digit count is wrong and the interior zeros land in the wrong places.
What to do
Draw the six place boxes FIRST — hundred thousands through ones — then fill them from the words. An empty box takes a zero; it cannot be skipped, because every box after it would slide over.
4.NS.7

Rounding by the biggest digit on the page

What it looks like
4,268 to the nearest hundred comes back as 4,200. The student underlines the LEADING digit rather than the place named in the question, so the decision is made by a digit that has nothing to do with hundreds — and the answer still looks like a rounded number, which is why it passes a glance.
What to do
Underline the place you are rounding TO, then put a finger on the digit immediately to its right. That finger decides and nothing else on the page does. Underlining before looking is the whole technique.
4.CA.1

Multiplying each digit separately and writing the results side by side

What it looks like
2,347 × 4 comes back as 8,121628: the student computes 2×4, 3×4, 4×4 and 7×4 and strings the answers together. Nothing is carried, and each piece is correct on its own, which is why it does not look like guessing.
What to do
Estimate first — 2,000 × 4 is about 8,000 — so any answer with six digits is wrong before a single column is checked. Then work right to left and write the carry above the next column before multiplying it.
4.CA.3

Breaking a factor apart and adding only the first piece

What it looks like
8 × 46 written as (8 × 40) + 6 = 326, or 7 × 43 as (7 × 40) + 3 = 283. The split is correct and the multiplier is applied to only one of the two parts.
What to do
Draw an arrow from the multiplier to BOTH pieces before computing either. Two pieces means two products and then one addition: (8 × 40) + (8 × 6). Check against the estimate — 8 × 46 is nearly 8 × 50, so about 400, and 326 is not close.
4.CA.4

Listing factors without pairing them, so some go missing

What it looks like
The factors of 42 given as 1, 2, 6, 7, 42. The student works upward by trial and stops when the numbers stop looking familiar, so 3, 14 and 21 are missed.
What to do
Work in PAIRS from 1 upward and write both members each time: 1 and 42, 2 and 21, 3 and 14, 6 and 7. Stop when the pair meets in the middle. Pairing makes the list self-checking, because a missing factor leaves a partner with nobody.
