A pipe fills a tank at a steady pace. The total volume after each minute is 3.2 liters, 6.4 liters, 9.6 liters, 12.8 liters.
What is the rate of change, and is it constant?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionCompare consecutive volumes: 6.4 − 3.2 = 3.2, 9.6 − 6.4 = 3.2, and 12.8 − 9.6 = 3.2. The same 3.2 liters is added each minute, so the rate of change is 3.2 liters per minute and it is constant.
The value 12.8 is the total after four minutes, not a rate.
7.NS.2At Proficiency
A drone is at an altitude of 48.5 meters. A diver is at −12.75 meters relative to sea level.
What is the vertical distance between them?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionThe distance is the absolute value of the difference: |48.5 − (−12.75)| = |61.25| = 61.25 meters. Subtracting the sizes instead of adding gives 35.75, which is what happens when the minus sign in front of 12.75 is missed.

Two spinners each have equal parts. Spinner 1 has 3 parts, one of them Red. Spinner 2 has 8 parts, three of them Red.
On which spinner is landing on Red more likely, and why?
Choose an answer to see the worked solution.
Worked solutionCompare 13 with 38 by writing both over 24: 13 = 824 and 38 = 924. Since 9 is greater than 8, Spinner 2 is the more likely, though only just.
Having more red parts is not by itself a reason — Spinner 2 also has more parts altogether. The comparison has to be made between the two ratios.
