What Checkpoint 3 covers

5 standards, 3 marked essential. Short names in our own words.

  • 7.AF.1Equivalent expressions; factoring and distributingEssential
  • 7.AF.2Real-world problems with rational numbersEssential
  • 7.AF.3Solving and modeling linear equationsEssential
  • 7.AF.4Solving, graphing, and interpreting inequalities
  • 7.GM.2Area and circumference of a circle

7.GM.2Approaching

A circular badge has a radius of 9 millimeters.

What is the circumference of the badge, in terms of π?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

7.AF.4At Proficiency

A delivery driver is paid $0.60 for each parcel plus $32 a day, and wants to earn at least $110 in a day.

Which inequality gives the number of parcels p the driver must deliver?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

7.AF.2Above Proficiency

A student solved this problem.

The temperature was −3°C. It fell 8 degrees, then rose 5 degrees. What is the temperature now?

The student answered 0°C.

Which statement explains the error?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

Where students go wrong

The most common mistake on each standard, and what to do about it, from the teacher pages in the Checkpoint 3 intervention.

7.AF.1

A subtracted bracket losing its sign after the first term

What it looks like
(4x + 9) − (7x − 2) simplified to −3x + 7. The minus reaches the 7x and stops, so the −2 keeps its own sign instead of becoming +2.
What to do
Rewrite the subtraction as adding −1 times the bracket before touching anything: (4x + 9) + (−1)(7x − 2). Now it is an ordinary distribution and every term inside changes sign: −7x + 2.
7.AF.2

Working the operations in the order the sentences arrived

What it looks like
A van starting with 84 parcels, dropping 27 and then collecting some, computed by adding before subtracting because the addition was mentioned first in the student's reading.
What to do
Underline the question sentence, then number the events in the order they HAPPEN. Write one line per event with a running total. The order of the sentences on the page is not always the order of the story.
7.AF.3

Undoing the nearest number first instead of the last operation applied

What it looks like
6(x + 5) = 48 solved by subtracting 5 from both sides. The 5 is the number closest to x on the page, and it is the FIRST thing that happened to x, so it must be undone last.
What to do
Ask what was done to x, in order: add 5, then multiply by 6. Undo in reverse: divide by 6 first, giving x + 5 = 8, then subtract 5 to get x = 3. Substituting back is the check that catches every ordering error.
7.AF.4

Not reversing the direction after dividing by a negative

What it looks like
−2x + 9 > 1 solved to x > 4 instead of x < 4. Every step is arithmetically correct and the answer set is the exact complement of the right one.
What to do
Whenever both sides are multiplied or divided by a NEGATIVE, flip the symbol. Test one value afterwards: x = 0 gives 9 > 1, true, and 0 is less than 4 — so the solution must be x < 4. One substitution settles it.
7.GM.2

Using the diameter where the formula wants the radius

What it looks like
A circle of diameter 16 given an area of 256π. The diameter is substituted straight into πr2, so the answer is four times too large.
What to do
Write r = down as its own line before substituting anything. If the question gives a diameter, halve it first and say so on the page. Four times too large is the signature of this error, because squaring doubles the doubling.
