3.M.6Approaching

A triangular flag has sides that measure 5 centimeters, 6 centimeters, and 7 centimeters.

What is the perimeter of the flag?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

3.NS.5At Proficiency

Which pair of fractions can be compared directly by comparing their numerators, because the two fractions already have the same denominator?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

3.NS.4Above Proficiency

A recipe calls for 23 cup of flour. A second recipe calls for an equivalent amount of flour, but measured in sixths of a cup instead of thirds.

How many sixths of a cup does the second recipe call for?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

Where students go wrong

The most common mistake on each standard, and what to do about it, from the teacher pages in the Checkpoint 3 intervention.

3.DA.1

Ignoring the key or the scale

What it looks like
A pictograph where each symbol stands for 5 read as though each stands for 1, or a bar graph with a scale of 2 read straight off the tick labels. The half-converted version is the commonest and the hardest to see: one row is multiplied by the key and the next is not, so the answer is wrong without being wrong by a tidy factor.
What to do
Read the key aloud before looking at any bar or row. Write the multiplier at the top of the page and keep it there.
3.M.3

Reading the hour hand as though it jumps

What it looks like
8:47 read as 9:47, because the hour hand has crept most of the way to the 9. The minutes are right and the hour is one too many.
What to do
The hour is the number the hand has already PASSED, not the one it is heading for. Until it touches the 9 it is still eight o'clock something.
3.M.5

Adding the sides when the question asked for area

What it looks like
A 9 by 3 rectangle answered as 24. That is the perimeter, correctly computed, for a question that asked for area.
What to do
Ask what the answer counts. Area counts SQUARES inside; perimeter counts UNITS of edge. Two different questions about the same picture.
3.M.6

Forgetting the two unlabeled sides of a rectangle

What it looks like
A rectangle labeled 14 along the top and 9 up the side gets a perimeter of 23. Only the two labeled sides were added; the opposite two were never written down.
What to do
Walk the outline with a finger and say each length out loud as you turn the corner. Four turns means four numbers.
3.NS.4

Changing only one of the two numbers

What it looks like
13 rewritten as sixths by doubling only the bottom, giving 16 — which is half the amount it started as, not the same amount.
What to do
Both numbers or neither. Whatever you do to the bottom you do to the top, because the pieces got smaller and you need more of them.
3.NS.5

Reading a bigger denominator as a bigger fraction

What it looks like
36 called larger than 34 because 6 > 4. The numerators are equal, so the denominator is doing all the work and it works backwards.
What to do
Same number of pieces, so whose pieces are bigger? Cutting a whole into 4 gives bigger pieces than cutting it into 6.
