3.CA.5Approaching

Which expression is equal to 7 × 4?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

3.NS.2At Proficiency

You want to shade a strip that is divided into 8 equal parts to show the fraction 58.

How many of the 8 equal parts should be shaded?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

3.CA.7Above Proficiency

A theater has 7 rows with 8 seats in each row. 50 of the seats are already filled.

How many seats are still empty?

Choose an answer to see the worked solution.

Where students go wrong

The most common mistake on each standard, and what to do about it, from the teacher pages in the Checkpoint 2 intervention.

3.CA.3

Counting the array instead of reading it

What it looks like
A 6 by 7 array of desks answered by counting all 42 one at a time — often correctly, and slowly. It looks like success until the array gets big or is only partly drawn.
What to do
Cover all but the first row and ask how many. Then ask how many rows. The two numbers are the whole multiplication.
3.CA.4

Dividing in the wrong order

What it looks like
"10 pencils shared among 5 students" worked as 5 ÷ 10. The total and the number of groups have swapped places, and the answer is a fraction where a whole number was wanted.
What to do
Name the total out loud before writing anything. The total is what gets cut up, so it goes inside.
3.CA.5

Treating every fact as separate

What it looks like
7 × 6 is known but 6 × 7 is recomputed, and 42 ÷ 7 is treated as an unrelated problem.
What to do
One array, four facts. Turn the array a quarter turn and it is the other multiplication; read it backwards and it is the two divisions.
3.CA.7

Choosing the operation from the size of the numbers

What it looks like
A problem with a big number and a small one gets divided regardless of the situation, because dividing is what you do to make big numbers smaller.
What to do
Ask whether the story is putting equal groups together or splitting something into equal groups. That decides it; the sizes do not.
3.CA.8

Reading the pattern as an addition when it is a multiplication

What it looks like
6, 12, 18, 24 continued as 30 correctly, but a table of fives is extended by adding 5 each time rather than seen as 5 times the position.
What to do
Ask for the rule in words, then ask what the tenth term is. A student who can only add cannot answer without listing everything in between.
3.NS.2

Reading the denominator as the number of shaded parts

What it looks like
A rectangle in 6 parts with 4 shaded named as 64, or as 44. The two numbers are both on the page and the student has not fixed which goes where.
What to do
Bottom names the piece, top counts them. Say "sixths" first, then count how many sixths.
3.NS.3

Counting tick marks instead of intervals

What it looks like
A line from 0 to 1 for eighths gets 8 marks drawn between the ends, making nine spaces. Off by one every time, and the error is invisible unless you count the gaps.
What to do
Count the SPACES, not the lines. Eighths means eight equal jumps from 0 to 1, which needs seven marks in between.
